OTTO'S ABODE WILL BE CLOSED EASTER SUNDAY AND DYNGUS DAY MONDAY! SEE YOU WEDNESDAY! Thanks for your understanding and continued support. WANAKENA! Happy Spring, Happy Full Moon. Happy Eclipse Countdown. What a lovely week in the mountains we have had. Well, last week we had a REALLY NICE little stretch of WINTER! Down in the single digits with nearly a foot of cold snow laying around. Folks were out skiing and everything! Four guys skied all the way down Peavine Swamp, all the way down Ranger School Road, and right on the SNOW CROQUET COURSE where they proceeded to get NICE AND COMFY here at Otto's Abode! They ate FOOD! Drank COFFEE! They appeared QUITE SATISFIED! Thanks to WANAKENA TAXI Volunteer Tom S. for driving the fellas back to their car. WOULD YOU LIKE TO VOLUNTEER for WANAKENA TAXI? It mostly means driving Cranberry Lake 50 people back to their car in Cranberry Lake Village. LET US KNOW! It's fun, it's easy and its magical. ALL OF THE SNOW HAS MELTED!!!! Where did it go? TURNED INTO MUD! River & Lake level reported to be back LOW again! TRAIL CONDITIONS... will be muddy and varied. Remember... WALK THROUGH THE MUD... and NOT around it. Please leave no trace and BE PREPARED! Crocus popped up the yard! Tiny black specks hop around on the quickly melting spring snow (SNOW FLEAS!). Received a report of a woodcock pacing back and forth for a couple hours the other day. Mama deer with a youngling chew'n'round under the bird feeders - mama has a BIG gash on the side of her tummy. It is fully healed but still looks pretty crazy. Anyone seen any Black Flies yet?!?!? Woodchucks scampering down the road! April 1st is OPENING DAY of TROUT FISHING! You can fish for trout all year... but after april 1st you can use live bait... AND KEEP EM TROUT! From Apr 1 – Nov 30, bear cans will be required for overnight campers in the Eastern High Peaks... you do NOT need bear canisters around Wanakena/Cranberry Lake. You can use them if you want, might just get made fun of. OR MAYBE THE JOKES ON THEM!?! Who? Nevermind. Don't forget! Packbasket Adventures Lodge in Wanakena does TAKE OUT HOT MEALS Thursday and Friday evenings! Pre order on their website earlier in the week! Sounds like some local seasonal businesses (in Star Lake & Cranberry Lake) could be opening their doors in conjunction with the Eclipse... we'll see! Here's some photographs of WINTERISH SPRING we had last week.
