WANAKENA WEEKLY #207 - 01/11/24 - 01/17/24

Happy Thursday!

Writing to you a stones-throw from the MOSTLY frozen Oswegatchie River, just below the rapids, right where the river turns into Cranberry Lake, the snow continues to fall! Nearly two and a half feet of snow blankets the village and surrounding wilderness. What a truly wonderful feeling to be snowed-in at Wanakena... hard to beat it. A wonderful bunch of Purple Finch have been spending time at the feeders! Flew in with the storm. Also the usual suspects of Downy Woodpeckers, White Breasted Nuthatch, Black Capped Chickadee, AND TONS OF BLUE JAYS! A flock of Canadian Geese flew over town today... heading south and honking up with the falling snow. Folks around here have been out to and reported from High Rock, Big Pine, Cathedral Rock, up the Moore Trail and out towards Dead Creek Flow... AND WHY SHOULDNT THEY! Winter showed up with SNOW and COLD AND WINDY! This weekend ahead looks to be even COLDER with temps down below zero! CRANBERRY LAKE ICE REPORT: from what we hear, most ice in our neck of the woods is on the tinner side of the spectrum. A wet and warm fall/early winter in combination of an insulating blanket of snow means THIN ICE! Sure, you can ice fish where its reasonable... BUT DONT YOU DARE RIDE THAT SNOWMOBILE ON IT! Most snowmobile trails are open. Any adventurous souls looking to sled off the trail down to Wanakena? Trail maps have it labeled as "PLOWED ROAD"... sounds inviting, doesn't it? Looks like the sun may make an appearance Sunday afternoon! WHITE OUT WEEKEND ONE MONTH AWAY!
