HELLO FROM WANAKENA NY THE 2025 SNOW CROQUET CAPITOL OF THE WORLD! Deer strut though the course at night and crossbill zig and zag overhead from treetop to treetop every morning... breaking to peck at the freshly laid sand before playing another round of tag. Woodpecker in the distance drum face on subzero branches. It's STILL WINTER out here in Wanakena! A STRONG ONE! Yes! The Oswegatchie still runs down near Nevil Island but is freezing up day by day; quieter and quieter. It barely got above freezing this past weekend. More snow and cold on the way. A great winter we're having IF YOU LIKE COLD AND SNOW! The Clifton-Fine Arena has ICE and is OPEN for skating! You'll have to go on facebook to find their hours and stuff. It snows like an inch or two every day. We haven't had a BIG DUMPER in a couple weeks... but all those days of snow showers ADD UP! Skiing the trails around Wanakena are reported to be in GREAT SHAPE! Trail to High Rock STILL FLOODED... best stay away or give it a shot and try skiing around the wet spot on the frozen pond. Snowmobile trails are also reported to be in excellent condition. Sledders are stopping into the shop! Folks are reporting some slush out on Cranberry Lake under the snow... but we have CONFIRMATION that someone snowmobiled all the way across the big lake no problem. Fisherfolk have been asking about the ice. We'll say: Ice thickness should NOT be a problem. You didn't hear that from us though. PLAY AT YOUR OWN RISK! We're just telling you what we know, not what you should do! Doesn't look like there will be a Cranberry Lake Fishing Derby again this year. The Cranberry Lake Boat Club folks are just DYING to thaw out their watercrafts and hit the wet lake... they have already announced the ICE OUT contest... C'MON GUYS, IT JUST FROZE UP! Let's slow it down people. SLOW IT DOWN! Local BOOK CLUB is to meet on Feb 11th. RANGER SCHOOL STUDENTS BACK FROM BREAK!
