WANAKENA WEEKLY #249 - 11/02/24 - 11/07/24

Happy Friday!

We were pretty close to taking this week off, too.... but here we go!!!!!! BROADCASTING FROM WANAKENA NY ROCK AND ROLL!!!!! Thanks for reading Wanakena Weekly! Wanakena Weekly is our way of keeping YOU in-touch with what's going on around town from OUR point of view! Our information and opinions do NOT reflect that of all the other FINE folks of WANAKENA! Thanks for reading our independent media. THANKS for spending your PRECIOUS time way out here far away from social medias where you have to CHOOSE to be here! Just like shipping small and local. For those that are able to... IT'S A CHOICE! Thanks for choosing to divert a portion of your TIME and MONEY to OUR ENDEVORS! Your delight is OUR delight! Most of you are just here for the photos anyway! WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE! WHO WORKS HERE?!?!?! IS THIS THING ON? DOES ANYBODY EVEN READ THIS ANY MORE? Town Of Fine: Minutes: November 06, 2024: Preliminary Budget Hearing [Digital Towpath]

Before long the Christmas music will be on the radio, and we will whip into a whirlwind of traditions, travel and spending extra time and money! ELECTION DAY CAME FIRST! GOD BLESS AMERICA! Up and down weather continues. It's not the way it used to be, they say. In their lifetimes at least. Some folks complain about winter, other folks complain about other folks complaining, some folks complain about other folks lack of imagination, folks folks folks folky folk folk folk! We're not immune to it! WE DO IT TOO OKAY! GOD BLESS THIS MESS! Anyway, it was NICE AND COLD AND FROSTY WITH A SPRINKING OF SNOW and then before you know it its back up into the 70s! There's not much (if any) natural flowery sweet stuff for them suck-up so BEE CAREFUL when slurping on your own beverages outside... a stinging pest may have flown into your vessel. OUCH! Otter sightings! Last week we indicated that just about all the leaves have fallen off the trees (save locus and tamarack) but we noticed the Tulip Tree out back REALLY hanging on to them! COOL! The CROSSBILLS are STILL around, chirpin' away! This change of season: "A time to do those other things." Plain and simple. Very nice! Cheers! TRAIL CONDITIONS... FROM THE STAR LAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT: October 31, Halloween day, day number 304 of 2024. We ran 4 rescue calls and set up for Trunk or Treat.  The more astounding number is that the last call yesterday was number 300 for the year.  This year by far has been our busiest year in a long time.  Our dedicated members answered all but 17! Cranberry Lake Rescue covered 13 for us while Gouverneur Rescue covered 4.  The community support we have here does not go unrecognized. That support helps to keep us going.  Thank again both members and community!

FROM THE CRANBERRY LAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT: We are sponsoring a NY Snowmobile Safety Course on Saturday, 11/9/24 at Cranberry Lake FD from 8:45-4:15 pm.  Register online—lunch provided by St. Lawrence Health, an affiliate of Rochester Regional Health. The instructor is Club President Heather Wilson who has 30+ years experience teaching middle & high school students. Dress for 30 minutes of outside class.

"My friends, today when I look out over Cicely, I see not a town, but a nation's history written in miniature. Inscribed in the cracked pavement, reverberating from every passing flatbed. Today, every runny nose I see says "America" to me. We were outcasts, scum, the wretched debris of a hostile, aging world. But we came here, we paved roads, we built industries, powerful institutions... Of course, along the way, we exterminated untold indigenous cultures and enslaved generations of Africans. We basically stained our star-spangled banner with a host of sins that can never be washed clean. But today, we're here to celebrate the glorious aspects of our past. A tribute to a nation of free people, the country that Whitman exalted. (reading) "The genius of the United States is not best or most in its executives and legislators, nor in its ambassadors or authors or colleges or churches or parlors, nor even in its newspapers or inventors, but always most in the common people." I've never been so proud to be a Cicelian. I must go out now and fill my lungs with the deep clean air of democracy."
- Chris Stevens (Northern Exposure S03E15 Democracy in America)
