WANAKENA WEEKLY #238 - 08/15/24 - 08/21/24

Happy Thursday!

HEAD'S UP YA'LL! STARTING THIS TUESDAY OTTO'S ABODE WILL BE CLOSED ON TUESDAYS THROUGH THE FALL WINTER AND SPRING! CATCH YOU NEXT SUMMER FOR SEVEN DAYS! ANYHOO... HI EVERYBODY! WE'RE BACK! YOU'RE BACK! Or maybe it's your first time here. Thanks for reading! This is Wanakena Weekly #238! THAT'S FOUR AND A HALF YEARS, PEOPLE! Basically, it all started back in January 2020 just before COVID and has continued ever since. We take some weeks off sometimes... and we don't want to jinx ourselves... but we're on a roll and will keep it going. Spread the word. We DONT flood your inbox, we WON'T show up in your FEED. FIGHT THE FEED! You're here because you want it. AND WE WANT YOU TO WANT IT! And if you don't want it today, check back... everything is archived so please scroll back and check it all out. BACK TO WHAT YOU CAME HERE FOR: WANAKENA WEEKLY! Summer is NOT over yet, folks! Sure, it got a little cold there, and energy is shifting... but YOU know there is STILL more summer left AND YOU KNOW that there are MANY WARM AND SUNNY FALL DAYS AHEAD OF US! Hope you can enjoy it! Fight the suck! The rain held-off pretty good this past weekend! IT WAS VERY NICE! Fern tips are browning. Apples falling from the trees along with the leaves. Red Squirrels chase the grays. This past Saturday Night's Clifton Fine Economic Development Corporation's BELLAS BARTOK concert in ZPARK was LIT! IT WAS A BANGER, OKAY! The next day RANGER SCHOOL STUDENTS ARRIVED (SUNDAY)! Class of 2025 here we GO! An alumnus from nineteen seventy-something stopped-in and was reminiscing about losing his wallet on the way back from the Pinecone one cold December night and finally found it in the spring when all the snow melted. LIVE CAM HERE! GOOD TIMES! Speaking of good times... FOLKS ARE OUT HERE DRINKING PUMPKIN BEER AND MARZENS AND STUFF! COME AND GET IT! Still got summer beers too, though. Racoons in the cooler. This past Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday was a bit rainier and cooler! LIKE VERY WET! And rather COLDISH! The Oswegatchie River up here in Wanakena is MOVIN' PRETTY GOOD AT THE MOMENT! Hikers on the Fifty reporting WET TRAILS! One spot on the Truck Trail close to Wanakena. A hiker just reported DEEP & WET conditions up on the trail to Dead Creek Flow - they said grandma went in up to her waist! Another group of FIFTY HIKERS (no, not fifty of them, smart asses) Cranberry Lake Fifty Hikers said they attempted the Olmstead Loop from the North and had to turn back because the outlet was raging too much. SUMMER IS NOT OVER, PEOPLE! CHILL-OUT! Town Of Fine: Minutes: August 14, 2024: August Meeting & Public Hearing [Digital Towpath]

St. Lawrence County Public Transit (slcnypublictransit.com), operated by The Arc Jefferson - St. Lawrence, suspended service on Route #22 servicing Canton, Star Lake, Colton, Potsdam, Oswegatchie and Harrisville effective Monday, August 19, 2024. The decision was made to suspend service based on difficulties staffing buses and historically low ridership on the route. Ridership on route #22 is the lowest of all fixed routes in the system, accounting for only 0.3% of all trips. Currently no date is set to resume service. Riders affected by this change may reach out to First Mile Last Mile (FMLM) to request transportation assistance. FMLM is a connector service that provides riders a ride to their bus stop at no charge. FMLM asks all riders submit requests a minimum of 48 hours before the service is necessary, however FMLM is committed to providing service to riders affected by the Route #22 suspension. FMLM will make effort to provide last-minute rides, but the ability to provide service is dependent on the availability of volunteer drivers. Passengers may access Volunteer Transportation Center’s First Mile Last Mile service by calling 315-644-6944 on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Schedules and additional information for riders can be found on the website at slcnypublictransit.com Find us on Facebook@SLCPublicTransit for additional information.

DOWN AT THE ABODE! We're stocked-up so we hope you stop-in! When not steering folks in the right direction via our ART-CENTRIC TRAVEL AGENCY SERVICES we... more than anything specialize in GROCERIES! Check out our produce cooler with over FOURTY varieties of fresh fruits and veg... THAT'S WHERE THE FRESH CHEESE CURD IS ALSO! We do our best to keep fresh Heidelberg Bread on the shelves. Nuts, dried fruit, tortillas, rolls and buns! Grocery Pantry holds eggs, dairy, frozen meats, and lots more chilled, frozen and dry goods! It's been said you can have a different meal every day of the week out of that pantry. WALK-IN COOLER WITH OVER SIXTY VARIETIES OF COLD BEER AND CIDER! We've all sorts of candy, snacks and ice cream too. We do our best to keep stock of health & beauty and hiking, camping and fishing essentials. Check out our map and book selection - we've got lots for sale and always lots on the wall for browsing upon. WE LOVE MAPS! Sometimes we have FULL BLOWN Art Exhibits... and when we don't, WE MAKE OUR OWN FUN! For most of this Summer we've had an awesome exhibition of paintings by Plattsburgh's Ian Burcroff. He retrieved them a couple weeks ago. Right now, we have free reign of the available WALL SPACE. Space-out with us, will ya? HOT COFFEE ALL THE TIME! LOTS MORE, TOO. YOU'LL SEE! Thanks for supporting your LOCAL YEAR-ROUND AWARD WINNING INVONVENIENCE STORE AND MOOOOORE!

So why shop local? What's the big deal? You can probably get everything cheaper at a big box store. And it's not like you NOT going to "head to town" sometimes later this week. Perhaps you already have? We ALL do it. You go to town, you get all your stuff done, get all the stuff you need... what, are you going to make ANOTHER STOP down here at Otto's Abode?!?! Who's got spare time in our fast-paced lives these days to make a SPECIAL STOP at some little boutique grocery store. What's the point? Well, you know. You know where we're going with this. You know WHY it's important to support little independent stores in the 21st century. And even if you "know" maybe you still dont want to, or dont have the time, or funda, or whatever. WE GET IT! But, just like ALL the OTHER things you do and or/ don't do, that you know you should or should not do. Like flossing. If you like things like Otto's Abode or other small family-owned operations, you'd be ABSOULTY CRAZY to think shops like ours can survive without your support. We're talking purchases. *blushing* We started typing this with good intentions. But our Thursday deadline has quicky approached. THE CHOICE IS YOURS! BYE FOR NOW!

Abode is a shot of our produce selection as of Wednesday PM. And FOR FUN HERE IS AN OTTO'S ABODE BLAST FROM THE PAST! Here is a shot of the Main Room from this date back in the year 2020!

"While we wait for the napkin, the soup gets cold, while the bonnet is trimming, the face grows old, when we've matched our buttons, the pattern is sold, and everything comes too late - too late."
