NEWS FROM WHA - News from the Wanakena Historical Association (WHA) - Footbridge Painting - In 2023, a concerted effort by volunteers, led by Beth Daut, succeeded in scraping (and retrieving) paint chips from the length of the foot bridge, top and bottom.  A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who turned out for an hour, a day, on multiple days to work on the scraping. The plan for 2024 includes a ‘spot scrape/sand’ as needed and power wash the entire bridge. We plan to measure moisture content of the wood to ensure the bridge is dry before applying two coats of stain. Volunteers will again be recruited when weather conditions appear appropriate. Wanakena History Center Opening Weekend:  On June 15 & 16, 2024.  WHA is planning a concert in the Wanakena Church and a reception at the History Center to kick-off the 2024 season. On June 15, Rik Palieri will sing and perform original and traditional songs on a variety of folk instruments, including the banjo, 6 & 12 string guitars, mouth bow, Native American flute and a collection of rare Polish bagpipes. Rick Kovacs & Angie Oliver will play back-up instruments. Regular Hours:  The History Center at 21 Second Street will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am to 4 pm beginning on June 15 through October 6, 2024.  Requests to visit at other times can be made by contacting one of the WHA Trustees or emailing Wanakenaha@aol.com. Seasonal Highlights: The History Center will feature a new rotating exhibit, “If Walls Could Talk!,” about the history of the original Rich Lumber Company worker houses with a focus on Second Street. Common Thread Quilts (CTQ), will host “Singer Sundays” from 1 to 4 pm beginning on Sunday, June 23rd through Sunday, August 18th. Each Sunday will feature different antique Singer sewing machines from the 1860s through the 1960s.  Stop by and try sewing on one of these beautiful machines while learning about the history of the Singer Corporation in the context of world, U.S., and local history. CTQ will present the 3rd annual Quilt Fest in Wanakena on Friday and Saturday, August 30-31, 2024. For information about WHA events, visit our Facebook page or webpage at www.wanakena.com/history-center.  For information about CTQ’s Singer Sundays and Quilt Fest 2024, visit https://www.birdhavenquilting.com/commonthreadquilts.

"Hiking - I don't like either the word or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains - not hike! Do you know the origin of that word 'saunter?' It's a beautiful word. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going, they would reply, 'A la sainte terre,' 'To the Holy Land.' And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not 'hike' through them." - John Muir
