– Burn ban is OVER and we got RAIN... burn that brush if you if you got em! Thunder and lightning along with the rain this past week. Black flies are OUT and BITING. Ticks, too... we hear. Anyone catch that full moon lunar eclipse the other night? Coyote and fox scamper about. Ranger School graduation last Saturday. SEE YA! White trillium EXPLOSION up Crackerbox Road and Painted Trillium speckled here in Wanakena. WHERE'D ALL THESE DANDILONS COME FROM!?!?! Yes, it is true: CONFIRMED bittern at The Setback. "Sound like a sink drain clearing out or something." There seems to be a real need for boat taxis on Cranberry Lake. Anyone? Tiny Chipping sparrow nest by the back door. Hiker at Dead Creek Flow reports lots of fishing boats. Trails are reported to be in fine shape with some occasional blowdown... with the rain this past week we had lots of hikers ditching their plans and going home early - boohoo. Yep, you guessed it: the CL50 has been published again! This time it is in the NEW Adirondack Life Magazine 2022 outdoor guide. It lists the CL50 as an alternative hike to beat the crowds.... perhaps they didn't see the 40 car line-ups last summer. Happy Trails, all! CONFIRMED: Pickle ball Saturday mornings 9am at tennis court - "be there" says Jerry C. THE OUTDOOR BATHROOM IS OPEN... the issue has been resolved: "Fill 'em up!" - Dave Z. Local BTI guy Tim Nargi brought us down some BLACKFLY larvae and pupa samples in jars - come on down and take a look - he'll also be providing some write-ups (see above) and perhaps some more specimens. BOOK TALK
- J.E. Irvin, a career educator and the award-winning author of five mystery novels, will visit Wanakena at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2022, for a book talk about her latest novel – BROKEN – which is set in the hamlet. Irvin will speak about her writing process as well as the local activities and events that inspired the novel. Hosted by Ottos’ Abode, the presentation will take place in the gazebo (weather permitting) or inside the store. Books will be available for purchase and signing, and each attendee will receive a goody bag of book-related items.

WANAKENA CEMETERY ASSOCIATION – Cremation Remains burial has gone up from $150 to $250. Also, there is no longer a backhoe charge for cremation burial because they don’t use a backhoe for cremation burials any longer.

WANAKENACCOMODATIONS - "Where do people stay?" is the question... Lots of primitive camping!!!!!! All free and open to the public!!!!!! Looking for more? Besides Packbasket Adventures Lodge, Wanakena has a number of "vacation" rental homes available. They are all of ADKbyOWNER/AirBnB/VrBo variety. It's someone else's place that YOU stay at. In other words: you can't just show up in Wanakena and expect to get a hotel roof under your head. You need to plan accordingly with your fancy pants smart phone. Do an internet search for Wanakena ADKbyOWNER/AirBnB/VrBo rentals and stuff will pop-up.

BEGINNING QUILT CLASS - On May 21 at 10:00am - at the SOS - instructor Annette Swartz (of Wanakena, NY - Home | Bird Haven Quilting and Fiber Arts ) From the Facebook: In this class you will learn basic machine piecing/quilting skills by making a table runner with instructor Annette Swartz owner of Bird Haven Quilting and experienced quilter and teacher. For a $25 fee you will receive a 12 x18 cutting board, a 6 x 12 quilting ruler, and a Fiskars 45mm rotary fabric cutter. We will provide thread, extra sewing machine needles, batting. You will need a simple sewing machine, but if you don’t have one there will be several available to share. You can bring your own fabric but there will be some fabrics available. Call Sue Novak at 315-566-5929 to reserve your spot in the class. At that time I will email you a detailed description of the class.
