WANAKENA WEEKLY #253 - 11/28/24 - 12/04/24

Happy Thursday!

Hello everybody! Happy December! Reporting from the ol' laptop at Otto's Abode in Wanakena... ya know, Cranberry Lake's OTHER store! We're just about dug out from the LAKE EFFECT BANGER that swept our way this past Thanksgiving weekend. The snow came in three waves... Friday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday evening. About a foot and a half of lake effect snow blanketed Wanakena. leading up to the snow, it had been a mild-ish early Autumn with some bouts of cold and frost. That being said, the ground underneath the freshly fallen snow was relatively warm, wet and soft. Because of that the foot and a half of snow has compressed from the warmth of the earth and under its own weight. Seems like every day after that another inch or two fell every day and keeps things fresh and beautiful. More snow and cold on the way! And after that, next week appears to show a warming trend getting up around the mid-forties for a day or so. That's good for the base though, right? We certainly will NOT lose all the snow. Snowshoeing should be GREAT! XC Skiing should be GREAT with maybe some wet spots here and there. Also it sounds like some dingus post-holed the trail to Janacks so that's NOT great! See below for NEW information regaring a RANGER SCHOOL SKI TRAIL! THE WOODS ARE BEAUTIFUL! Ranger School students back from Thanksgiving break with a few weeks until end of semester! Hello neighbors: Hope you got you boat out of the water! There were about fifty Ducks in the Oswegatchie the other night HONKING up a storm. Geese overhead also honking it up as the flying through the storm. These magical silent heavy with snow days and nights are some of the most beautiful moments of the year. AROUND TOWN... This Saturday, December 7th from 11-4pm is the annual SOS/Adirondack Exhibit Center's eighth annual SHOP LOCAL SATURDAY SPECTACULAR! That's right folks! "Reading and conversation are to winter what the flowers are to the spring and fruits are to autumn. They are the boast of the season. Superior to vernal joys, these permanent pleasures of the intellect are in vigor when those are faded and no more." - R.B. Thomas (1795)
