Happy Frosty Thursday!
We're glad you are here! Thank you for reading Wanakena Weekly! Hard frost on the Croquet Court! Leaves falling hard! Wasps, hornets and flies on the porch in the sun! Oh my! Crossbill VERY PRESENT down at the Abode every morning. SO cool. The skies are ALIVE! Rainbow! Comet! Northern Lights! Snow! Full Moon! Migrating birds! Nighttime comes sooner and sooner every day... the darkness lingering into the day. Less and less sunshine day by day. Tis the season! It was ANOTHER great Oktoberfeast Everyone... Great weather! Great folks! Great food! Great tunes! Great Job! The Wanakena Water Company turned off A LOT of waters this past week! You know what that means... SEE YA IN THE SPRING! Though, more and more "SUMMER FOLKS" are catching-onto WHITE OUT WEEKEND! SEE YA IN FEBRUARY! The Wanakena Historical Association's Wanakena History Center marked its last week open for the 2024 season this past weekend. TRAIL CONDITIONS: Folks are overall reporting decent conditions. There was a guy doing the CL50 who was complaining about poor signage.... but he was doing it as an ULTRA trail run so he was running as fast as he could, and he missed a turn. Sounds like CHICKEN OR THE EGG?! What's the difference between a "FOOD DESERT" and simply "LIVING IN A RURAL MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY"! Perspective? Expectations? Doing an ULTRA (CL50 in under 24 hours) on autopilot and missing a turn... is it lack of navigation skills or lack of signage? MAPS MAPS MAPS! I know... WE WILL BLAME THE STATE! HERE, HERE! How dare those trail maintenance DEC folks who did such a poor job! Side note: Five Ponds Partners, the group the created the Fifty does not celebrate the "ULTRA" achievement. The group understands folks will want to run it as fast as they can, but the FPP does not recognize or reward the achievement - a separate external group (Northeast Ultra Eight) does. Participating in a Five Ponds Backcountry Wilderness experiences: KEEP 'EM WILD AND SLOPPY! Bag some sags! Anyway, enough of THAT! The Otto's Abode bumper sticker prohibits us from engaging with him via the comment section... DANGIT! "Pushin' on Buttons and Staring at Screens!" It's for the best to avoid the knuckleheadnumbskullery. So that's why YOU'RE reading about it HERE. Happy trails! Met many wonderful hikers and paddlers out this past week out enjoying the season! “With man all is uncertainty. He does not confidently look forward to another spring. But examine the root of the savory-leaved aster, and you will find new shoots, fair purple shoots, which curve upward and bear the next year’s flowers, already grown half an inch or more in earth. Nature is confident.”
-Henry David Thoreau (Oct 21, 1858)
