WITHINANUTSHELL – Well, IT SNOWED! And it got COLD! And warm again, and cold again - you catch the drift. At least 6 inches of the fresh fluffy white stuff, down in the single digits for a couple nights there. Snow speckled Spring Fling was warm by the fire with friends and neighbors. New York State Burn Ban in effect! More info below. The Oswegatchie was WIDE open wet and wild with waterfowl last week. It has since SIEZED-UP with ice. Caught a couple mallards snoozing down here by the footbridge as the temperature plumited. None of those quackers got stuck in the ice - we checked. There is absoulty NO chance of an ice jam this year. That makes two years in a row. Made a trip up to Little Falls and saw quite a bit of chunks piled up on the shoreline there. Anyone have any photos of Little Falls deep winter this past year? We think there was a JAM up there, which is normal. Todays Ice Jam Danger remains LOW. SPRING IS BEAUTIFUL - enjoy it! What a lame term: "Mud Season".... NO SHIT! That's like calling winter "snow season". IT IS SPRING, PEOPLE... it snows, it melts, it rains. IT'S SPRING. When life gives you mud... well, you know the rest. Stay off the steep trails and when hiking in the woods WALK THOUGH THE MUDDY PUDDLES and NOT around them. Keep it simple. IMPORTANT: Clomp the mud off your boots BEFORE you leave a wilderness areas - as to prevent the spread of invasive species though plant fragment and seeds. Same applies for your watercraft - clean off mud and plant fragments BEFORE you leave a waterway; "stop aquatic hitchikers!". Word on the street is: decent Maple Season sofar! BOBCAT FOOTPRINTS up the truck trail yesteday in fresh snow! Club moss perkin-up, some Turkey out there, deer ate nearly all the holly bush, grackle blabber, ducks quackin', geese honkin', mergansers rollin the Oswegatchie Rapids, blue jay clusters, chickadeedeedee, eagles circle above, nuthatch, redwing blackbird, squirrels scamper and more! Hillside Diner opening April 1st (NO JOKE!). The Ranger School is excited to be hosting an in-person open house on April24. Share the news!!! Registration is required. NYS BURN BAN – A burn ban is in effect from March 16th through May 14th in St. Lawrence County and the rest of the state according to the DEC. Open burning is prohibited in NY, with several exceptions: Campfires less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width and diameter are allowed; small cooking fires are allowed; fires cannot be left unattended and must be filly extinguished; only charcoal, or clean, untreated or unpainted wood can be burned; Ceremonial or celebratory bonfires are allowed. In towns with a total population less than 20,000 you may burn tree limbs with attached leaves. The limbs must be less than 6 inches in diameter and 8 feet in length (also refered to as brush). However, this is NOT allowed from March 16th – May 14th due to increased risk of wildfire.

The CARTOON CONTEST exhibition has been extended for ONE MORE WEEK! The WINNERS of the CARTOON CONTEST have been announced. ON VIEW NOW! New show coming soon! Stay tuned! Local BTI guy Tim Nargi brought us down some BLACKFLY larvae... one word: HISTOBLASTS! C'mon down to the shop and check 'em out! NEXT FOLK JAM is Easter Sunday April 17th 3-5pm! Produce rack remains STOCKED. Nearly half of it comes from Juniper Hill Farm, an organic farm on the eastern edge of the Adirondacks. Bread, milk, eggs and many more dry, cold and frozen groceries. Candy, snacks, ice cream and soft drinks, too. HOT COFFEE and baked goods at the counter. Books, maps, music for your browsing pleasure. Camping/fishing/hiking knickknack patty-whacks. Over SIXTY varieties of beer/cider/etc... in the walk-in cooler. Why be a square when you could be a deconstructed cube?
ON VIEW - *** EXTENDED ONE MORE WEEK*** FIRST ANNUAL CARTOON CONTEST AND EXHIBITION ----- The other day while mindlessly thumbing through social media, wasting away precious minutes of my short time here on earth, the following inspirational-meme-quote appeared: "Make decisions as if you were on your deathbed.". A couple of days later the surficial "you only live once" interpretation was challenged by a pot of coffee. You see, there was an old, unfinished pot of coffee perched and warming on the machine. It had been there since morning and had cooked down to a dark, burnt-smelling mud. Recalling the meme, I wondered: If I were on my death bed, what I would do? Would I dump-out the coffee-sludge for a new pot and live-up my last moments on earth with fresh coffee or would I poetically drink the old, toasty coffee soup? Had I been on my death bed in that moment perhaps I would embrace the undesired brew and gulp it down deep into my decaying physical form. Considering the fact that I was not on my literal death bed I dumped it and made a new pot. This existential conundrum seemed to me as well-suited for exploring though the cartoon-form. ----- The collection of TEN cartoons will remain displayed ON VIEW on the gallery wall of Otto's Abode for all to see from February 18th - March 28th. ----- Voting occurs in-person during regular operational hours of Otto's Abode February 18th - March 14th. Winners announced Wednesday, March 16th. CASH PRIZES awarded for "Funniest Cartoon", "Best Cartoon", and "Best Artwork". Winning cartoons will also be published in Clifton-Fine's Bargain Hunter the week of Tuesday, March 22nd.
